About this event

2-Day Dognition Workshop

Developed from Canine Cognition Research at Duke University
https://dognition.com/

The Dognition assessment system comes out of more than a decade of canine cognition research led by Dr. Brian Hare at Duke University’s Canine Cognition Center. That research looks at how dogs think—how they solve problems, use social information, make decisions, and persist when things aren’t obvious. It gives us a framework for understanding why dogs approach tasks differently, even when training history looks the same.
This two-day workshop takes that research and puts it into practice.
We’ll be hosting a certified Dognition instructor Kim Melton-Hall who will guide teams through a series of structured games and assessments. These are not training exercises and they’re not performance tests. They are designed to reveal patterns in how a dog processes information—problem-solving style, use of social cues, memory, and flexibility.

At the end of the workshop, each dog will receive an individual Dognition report. This report is not a label and it’s not a ranking. It’s a working document meant to help handlers understand how their dog learns and how that should influence training choices, handling decisions, and expectations.

This workshop is appropriate for puppies through adult dogs and is especially useful for handlers who want to:
• Stop guessing why something “isn’t clicking”
• Match training strategies to the dog in front of them
• Improve clarity and reduce handler-driven friction
• Build a more effective working relationship based on understanding, not assumption
You’ll leave with a clearer picture of your dog’s cognitive tendencies and a practical way to approach future training with more intention and less noise.
